Molinos - Windmills -

Molinos de grano - Windmills for grain -

Who doesn´t recognize this image? The first impression we get just before landing on Majorca are the wheels of plenty colorful windmills welcoming the visitors. If the famous Don Quihote had been born on Majorca he would have very soon exhausted all his resources of battle.
The history of the windmills dates back to 1229 and the Christian conquest of the island of Majorca by King Jaime I. During 17th and 18th centuries they lived their time of glory and there were about 1000 of them all over the island. Most of the windmills were used to extract water and were constructed in 19th century. The oldest one dates back to 1845 and is situated in the plane of Sant Jordi.
The windmills of the area around the airport, known as el Pla, extracted water to water the fields. This particular part of the island was called “the food stock” of Majorca and there the windmills wheel all the time. Water extracting windmills exist not only in Palma area but also in the zones of Santanyi, Campos, Sa Pobla and Muro.
Another typical structure of the windmill, more ancient, was used to mill the grain. This type we can still find in the municipalities of Llucmajor, Felanitx, Manacor and Porreres just as well as around Palma, Santanyi and Campos. It was also used to mill the salt extracted on the island.
The typical construction of the windmill consists of a rather high tower of about 10 m and on its top is situated the wheel with of the wings. The grain mill has less but bigger wings while the water extracting type has more and smaller wings connected in a circle and sort of an arrow which big tail sticks out of that wheel.
The number and the size of the wings had changed throughout the centuries and the type of the windmill. In the grain type the upper floor was occupied by the big stones which milled the grain (or the salt) while the ground floor was used as miller´s premises.
There also exists yet another type of mill without wings, called “blood mill” in which the stones were rolled by an animal, usually a donkey. This type of mill was popular in zones of less wind or water. Its efficiency was lower but being of so simple construction it was used in the oil extraction of the olives.

The windmills lost their function and agricultural importance long time ago but they preserve their great cultural and historical value in the history Majorca. Now we take a daily pleasure in the movement of their colored wings in the wind although many are still without wheel and in ruin. Luckily there is the governmental program of the Consell of Majorca from 1993 which is dedicated to the preservation and reconstruction of this typical symbol of the island.

Majorca incognita

Halo my friend, I´d like to present you Majorca. And don´t tell me that you know everything about this island so famous with it´s beauty, it´s mild climate and beaches with crystal waters. Having been here and sunbathed in Arenal or Magaluf, having seen the silhouette of La Seu clearly cut in the sunset light and the tranquil bay of Palma full with sails of the elegant yachts -   all that sill doesn´t mean you´ve seen Majorca.

I´ll show you Majorca incognita – the island with the daily beauty, the island that every year makes fall in love hundreds of persons who come for just a few days and then decide to stay here forever, the small island of just 623 km2 and a great mountain – La Tramuntana. Which  – believe it or not – has 11 picks over 1000m high and magnificent rocky coasts which sight from the sea conquered the heart of the Archiduque Luis Salvador two centuries ago and not just made him live here for the rest of his life but also study and announce the island to the world with his books. Actually he was the first one to promote the island - and with what result? The result is that more than 130 languages from all over the world are spoken in Majorca today and all these foreign people, forasters as the locals call them, live quietly together and collaborate between themselves so that each one can reach his personal happiness, united just by their love for this magic island.

Mallorca incógnita

Hola amigo, quiero presentarte Mallorca.
